How to Fly – A Christmas Fable
Long ago, in a farawayfaraway land called the Christmas Cave, some reindeer were shivering with exhaustionexhaustion in their cold stable.stable. When Santa came back with some hay for their beds and their dinner, he muttered,muttered, “I wish, I just wish that you guys could fly.”
He blocked his nose and shuddered,shuddered, “Hey, get over here you lazy elves and clean out this stable, it stinks in here!”
“No, we’re having forty years off!”
“Yeah, yeah, yeah!” came a choruschorus of elves.
Santa shook his head and sighed.sighed. He reached for a brush to groom the reindeer and he put his foot in a bucket of water.
“Aahhh!!!” he howledhowled as he banged his head on one of the hanging glowingglowing lights, causecausing it to fall from the hook on the raftersrafters to the straw on the floor below, nearly causing a fire.
“ We’re runningrunning out of time to deliverdeliver the presents! Why oh why can’t you guys fly? We’ll never be able to get to every boy and girls’ home on Christmas Eve. You’re just too slow!”
The reindeer slumpedslumped their heads as they heard his speech and Santa felt bad about yelling at them.
They set off. Finally,Finally, near the end of their journey, when Santa and the reindeer were exhaustedexhausted and it was nearlynearly sunrise,sunrise, they reached New Zealand.
Along the road they came across a strange building.building. It had huge black spiders creeping in their stickysticky white webs. There were big, yellow menacemenacing eyes starestaring out of the cobwebbedcobwebbed windows. RattleRattling sounds were coming from the atticattic and a rottenrotten smell was waftingwafting through the open door.
Santa took a moment to study the house while the reindeer backed off. Not realiserealising, Santa drove the team into a huge rock in the front yard. The sleigh skiddedskidded into the weird house, hittinghitting a table on which a bubblebubbling potionpotion in a tall glass jar was sitting.sitting. The collisioncollision caused the evil-smelling liquid to spill. Drops sprinkledsprinkled over all the reindeer, making them shivershiver and shake.
“Woofff!!!” The reindeer took off in a flash, pulling Santa, the sleigh and the sack with the remainingremaining presents into the rosy-reddeningreddening sky.
“It’s a miracle!miracle! We’re flying! Whaa-hoo!!” Santa shouted with excitement.excitement. “Now we’re back in business.business. We’ll have the last of the presents delivered in no time and be back at Christmas Cave before you can say Ho Ho Ho!”
And so that is how Santa and his reindeer got to be able to fly and get around the whole world on Christmas Eve.
