Rhodopis - A Greek Cinderella
Once there was a girl called Rhodopis.Rhodopis. She was from Greece but she was sold to a man and his family as a slave in Egypt.Egypt. All the people had straight black hair and brown eyes but Rhodopis had curly fair hair and green eyes. Her master made her do all the chores for the family like washing the clothes in the river. She had no friends, only animals - a bird, a monkey and a hippopotamushippopotamus that she liked to sing and dance for.
One day her master was sleeping under a tree by the river and he woke up as she was dancing. He saw she needed some dancing shoes so he got her some diamond slippers.
There was great excitement in Egypt when the Pharoah (Fearoh) announced that he was going to have a ball and all the Egyptian people were invited (but not Rhodopis because she was a Greek slave). Even the servant girls were allowed to go. Rhodopis had to wash clothes at the river. She sang sad songs while she beat them on the rocks. When she was washing the clothes she got her slippers wet so she put them on a rock to dry in the sun.
Suddenly a falconfalcon swooped down and grabbed the slipper in its sharp claws. The falcon was actually a god. Meanwhile the Pharoah was bored because he didn't like dancing. The falcon dropped in like a missilemissile and put the slipper at his feet.
The Pharoah knew that it was a sign from the god Horus.Horus. He knew that whoever had the other slipper had to be his bride. The Pharoah looked all over Egypt and did not stop looking. He came to the house where Rhodopis was living and all the farm daughters and servant girls tried it on but it did not fit them. Then the Pharoah saw Rhodopis hiding behind the rushes and he saw the other slipper on her and of course it fit Rhodopis. Then they got married and she became queen and they lived happily ever after.
